Indonesia - Politics - Former President Suharto
Former Indonesian president Suharto waves to journalists shortly after being visited by former prime minister of Malaysia Mahatir Muhammad. The Attorney General may drop its plan to re-examine former president Suharto to determine whether he is fit to stand trial because it could cost too much money. Past efforts to bring Suharto to court on corruption and human rights charges have been derailed by a statement from a team of government doctors, which said the former president was unfit to stand trial because of brain damage and permanent injury to his nervous system.

nih foto mesra Ibu Tien ama Soeharto... i like this photo very much.
Dari Mr. Tribeca, many thanks sdh nambahin:
SOEHARTO, 1921-2008 Maj. Gen. Suharto, left, in October 1965 with Gen. Sabur, commander of Sukarno's presidential guard. After 32 years as the leader of Indonesia, Mr. Suharto was forced from office in 1998. Mr. Suharto died from multiple organ failure on Jan. 27 at the age of 86. Like his predecessor Sukarno, left, Mr. Suharto, right, worked to forge national unity in a fractious country of 200 million people comprising 300 ethnic groups speaking 250 languages and inhabiting more than 17,000 islands spread over a 3,500-mile archipelago. Sukarno, left, fell from power in 1965 after an abortive leftist coup. Mr. Suharto, one of the few senior military officers to escape execution on the first day of that uprising, moved decisively against the insurgents and effectively took control of the country, but not before a blood bath left hundreds of thousands dead. Suharto, right, with Gen. Abdul Haris Nasution in September 1966. President Suharto took the oath of office on March 11, 1968 in Jakarta. Mr. Suharto brought what became known as the New Order to Indonesia, but at the price of repression. |
Mr. Suharto with his 5-year-old son Hutomo Mandala Putra, popularly known as Tommy, on June 24, 1968.
Mr. Suharto with Vice President Spiro Agnew, and Mrs. Suharto with Judy Agnew in Washington in May 1970.
Mr. Suharto after he was forced from office. He managed to escape criminal prosecution for embezzling millions of dollars, possibly billions, by having himself declared too ill and mentally incapable to stand trial. A civil suit against him was pending at the time of his death.
Mr. Suharto and his family became notorious for controlling state enterprises and taking kickbacks for government contracts, for siphoning money from state charities, and for gross violations of human rights. At left, Mr. Suharto at the family's Tapos ranch in Bogor, West Java, Indonesia.
President Clinton with Mr. Suharto in October 1995.
Mr. Suharto voted in the presidential elections on July 5, 2004, near his home in Jakarta.
When he came to power, Mr. Suharto refused at first to move into the presidential palace, saying he preferred to live in his own modest house in Jakarta. During his years as president, however, his homes became palatial.
The family has denied that it benefited unfairly from tax breaks and other favors and said government contracts had been subject to competitive bidding, a widely disputed assertion. At left, Mr. Suharto during his 86th birthday celebration in June 2007.

NASIONAL
Wawancara Eksklusif
H.M. Soeharto: Nyatanya, Saya Tidak Korupsi
Sehari-hari, kini Sweden menemani Pak Harto mulai subuh hingga malam.
Kini dia hanya dijaga 10 pensiunan Paspampres, termasuk Sweden.
Satu-satunya perkakas yang terbilang keluaran abad ke-21 hanyalah televisi layar datar 36 inci merek Samsung, ditambah sebuah jam meja berbentuk bundar bertuliskan "Peringatan 1.000 Hari Wafatnya L.B. Moerdani".
Mantan Presiden Soeharto duduk membelakangi rana.
Petikannya:
Apakah kesehatan Bapak sekarang cukup baik?
(Mantan Presiden Soeharto hanya tersenyum. Tidak menjawab sepatah kata pun).
Bapak baik-baik saja?
Saya baik-baik saja.
Bapak masih sempat mengurus yayasan-yayasan yang dulu Bapak dirikan?
Dhar, Dhar...
Ya. Kontinu, terus.
Yayasan lainnya apa saja?
Ada tujuh. Supersemar mengatasi kemiskinan.
Selain Yayasan Supersemar, yayasan apa lagi?
Lantas itu, Dharmais, Mandiri, Gotong Royong, YAM (Yayasan Amal Bhakti Muslim) memberi bantuan masjid.
Apakah Yayasan Amal Bhakti sekarang masih bisa membangun masjid?
Tinggal 33 yang belum. Kompletnya 999, nanti tahun 2009.
Mem, mem... membangun lagi. Ada lagi, terus saja.
Akan membangun masjid sampai berapa jumlahnya?
Membangun satu, satu, satu lagi, sampai 999. Nyambung terus.
Mengapa harus 999?
Sembilan, sembilan, sembilan dibagi-dibagi jadi 99.
Dakab mengentasken kemiskinan. Keseluruhannya mengentasken kemiskinan.
Ada yayasan yang bergerak di bidang pertanian?
Ada juga.
Karena Bapak ahli pertanian, ya? (Pertanyaan diulang dua kali)
He, he, he... cita-citanya. Cita-citanya itu. Yayasan pertanian, apa namanya, Mekar Sari. Oleh Mamiek (putri bungsu Pak Harto) dikembangken jadi pembibitan buah. Eh, apa namanya, luasnya dua, dua, 250 hektare.
Apakah pengurus yayasan memberikan laporan rutin?
Ada laporan. Ada tanggung jawab.
Masih sempat hadir dalam rapat yayasan?
Saya hadir, akan tetapi tempo-tempo.
Berapa besar dana yang disalurkan seluruh yayasan per tahunnya?
Ehm, ehm, ehm... (Pak Harto terbatuk-batuk).
Ketika dituduh melakukan korupsi, apakah Bapak merasa sakit hati?
He, he, he... biarken saja. Biarken ngomong, pating celomet. Biarken saja disangka korupsi. Nyatanya, saya tidak korupsi. Lantas saya dikasih satu trilyun.
Satu trilyun karena menang gugatan terhadap majalah Time. Akan digunakan untuk apa uang itu?
Kalau sudah dibayar, apa namanya, untuk pajak 350%.
Maksudnya 350 milyar atau 35% untuk membayar pajak?
Ya, ya. Sisanya untuk bantu orang miskin.
Tapi, sisanya kan masih banyak?
He, he, he... sugih dadakan (kaya mendadak). He, he, he... semua disumbangkan fakir miskin.
Apa benar Bapak punya tanah di mana-mana?
He, he... ndak benar.
Tanah pemerintah, hak guna usaha.
Bapak masih sering menonton televisi?
Tempo-tempo.
Acara televisi apa yang paling sering ditonton?
Badut-badutan, pelawak, Srimulat, Tukul, he, he, he....
